White Collar Shelter

Ullappa Art Symposium and Festival, Turku Cultural Centre in Turku, Finland, 1997

As part of this international visual art symposium and festival, artists were invited to create new works during a two-week residency, with the final pieces being exhibited in the Just Gallery at the Turku Cultural Center.

Walter purchased men’s white-collared shirts from local thrift shops, then tore out the seams and reconfigured the pieces. She basted these pieces together into the form of a tent, hand-stitching for two days in the public square in front of the Cultural Center. The final form was stitched together by machine in the studio for exhibition in the gallery.
